The Associação Ashaninka do Rio Amônia – Apiwtxa (a term that means ‘unity’) was set up in 1991 and formally registered in 1993 ̶ the year following the demarcation of our lands ̶ as part of the strategy of strengthening our community. The association acts as the operational arm of the community, so that we can administer our projects and coordinate social and political approaches.
It is through the Associação Apiwtxa that we Ashaninka of the Amônia river carry out our projects for the well-being of our community and of the communities adjacent to our territory.
As well as carrying out our projects, we also work in partnership with several Brazilian and international governmental and non-governmental organizations. Working with these partners we analyse and draw up strategies for restoring degraded areas, protecting biodiversity, disseminating agroforestry techniques and cultural outreach.
